We seek a post-doctoral scientist for a full-time, one- to two-year appointment in the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, for a project jointly supervised by Professors Doug Clark and Matt Francis.
The focus of this research project is to develop a phage-display, activity-based technique for the rapid evolution of new enzymatic catalysts for sustainable chemical synthesis in
both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Principal Investigators: Develop a phage-display method suitable for evolving, displaying, and screening enzymes in aqueous and nonaqueous reactions; isolate and characterize evolved enzymes for biocatalytic activity and operational stability.
Qualifications:
• Ph.D. degree, with strong background and training in bio/chemistry, bio/chemical engineering or related field;
• Strong work ethic, proven organizational and communication skills with keen observational and critical thinking abilities required; and
• Must be flexible, have collaborative, team-oriented style yet able to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent technical skills in one of more of the following areas are preferred: phage and/or surface display and functional screening of biologically-active peptides; protein engineering via directed evolution using error-prone PCR and/or DNA shuffling; standard molecular biology techniques; enzymatic activity assays; protein purification methods.
