  About the Separations Research Program

Program Overview

In 1984 the Center for Energy Studies and the Bureau of Engineering Research, with the support of the Chemical Engineering and Chemistry departments at The University of Texas at Austin established the Separations Research Program. This cooperative industry/university program performs fundamental research of interest to chemical, biotechnological, petroleum refining, gas processing, pharmaceutical, and food companies.

In this cooperative endeavor, the university provides the framework for the program, the core of researchers, and a significant investment in equipment and facilities. Sponsoring companies pay membership fees that are used to purchase additional equipment, support researchers, and produce research documentation. In return, the sponsors receive several benefits.

Benefits to Sponsors

Of primary benefit to our sponsors are the research results made available to them through manuscripts, theses, and dissertations. These documents are often provided to sponsors in advance of their open publication. Other information includes a semi-annual newsletter Update, the program's annual report, specific project reports, design manuals, computer programs, and video tapes. This information is not made available to the general public.

Participating companies send representatives to our Fall conference where research results are presented to our guests who then join with us in discussing those results. The conference also provides an opportunity for the participants to meet and exchange their own ideas with other industry representatives. Sponsors take an active role in planning the SRP's future efforts during these events. In addition to the Fall meeting, an internet meeting is held each Spring. This meeting allows a broad cross-section of the sponsoring company representatives to become exposed to our on-going research efforts in an inexpensive manner.
