Book Description:
One of the first complete, self-contained overviews of environmental catalysis—a multi-million dollar business with broad applications from automobile industries to power plant technologies—this book is an essential guide to the use of catalysts to protect the environment. Prepared by the acclaimed editors of the highly-regarded Handbook of Catalysis, this text addresses a topic of increasing importance in our environmentally-proactive modern world.

Summary: The Best Reference Source for Environmental Catalysis
Rating: 4
The book is divided into the two major application areas for environmental catalysts; mobile sources (cars and trucks) and stationary sources (gas turbines and furnaces/boilers). As a design engineer of ethylene cracking furnaces I decided to purchase the book to learn more about the application of environmental catalyst (SCR's) to industrial furnaces for NOx reduction. The book adequately serves the interests of a variety of readers with different backgrounds; however, the work has been prepared by individuals with a background in catalyst design.
The section on automotive catalytic converters is very interesting and covers the history and future of these devices. The non-technical reader will gain a useful knowledge of automotive catalyst and an appreciation for the design considerations involved. Detailed catalyst mechanisms are lightly covered to the extent that the reader will gain an understanding of how the catalytic converter in his/her car operates. The section on stationary sources covers the specific types of catalyst used to achieve selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The section is complete in its coverage of the history and technology of SCRs and, in contrast to the section on mobile sources, goes very deeply into the catalytic mechanisms associated with the different types of SCR catalysts. Since no introduction to catalyst design principles is given in the text and many specific catalyst design terms are used without definition this section is very closely targeted to the catalyst professional. A third area of environmental catalysis covered by the book is catalytic combustion for gas turbine applications which is covered in a complete and lightly technical section at the end of the book.
The book is considered a necessary reference for anyone involved in the field of air emissions reduction. Each section is extensively referenced with a detailed bibliography at the end of the section. The editors of Environmental Catalysis have made sure to include all the major works of the field in the bibliographies and from these the reader can follow a path to the specific information they are looking for. This reviewer is very pleased with the book and has not found a better reference work from which to start a detailed investigation in a specific area of environmental catalyst technology.
